Scenario – Chris Brown: What Would You Do?

Chris Brown has just been made office supervisor of a five-person team in a mid-sized accounting firm. James, the CPA who owns the firm, believes that Chris is just what he is looking for to manage the people and to deal with the clients who often come to the office to meet with James and the other ten accountants who are also part of the firm. James likes Chris’s energy and her attitude. Over the past two years that Chris has worked for the firm, first as a temporary receptionist and most recently as James’s private administrative assistant, Chris has hardly ever taken a sick day. She frequently works overtime, especially during busy season, and mostly without being asked. Although Chris has two teenaged children, she never lets her family interfere with her job. Chris is smart and knows the accounting business well

Three of Chris’s team had lunch on the Friday that Chris’s promotion was announced. Neither Rosemary, Karen nor Samika are very happy that James promoted Chris. It’s not that they dislike Chris; it’s just that they can’t understand why the firm suddenly needs an office supervisor, and they are also worried that Chris’s workaholic behavior might now be expected of them. Over lunch, they decide they need to confront James, but they don’t know how to do it.

The two other members of Chris’s team, Tom, an accounting clerk and Theresa, the receptionist, are looking forward to having a new boss. They believe that Chris, since she was formerly "one of them," will work hard to see that they will get long-overdue performance reviews and the pay increases they are sure will follow

You are Chris Brown; it’s your first day in your new role. What Do You Do?
