Scenario Wai Mai Lau: What Would You Do?
Wai Mai Lau came to the U.S. in 2000 as part of a visa lottery system held in her native China. She has worked hard studying English, and she wishes to get ahead in her new homeland. She knows that she can take courses at a discount at her place of employment, the local community college, after she writes, and hopefully passes, her GED exam in two months.
Wai Mai thinks she would like to be a nurse since she sees all the job ads for medical careers. Then again, she loves children and hopes to have children of her own some day, so perhaps she should study to be a teacher since she could then have summers and vacations with her children, and the job prospects for teachers are good, too.
Her parents, still in China, have always wanted a doctor in the family and frequently write her about their hopes and dreams for her since she is the only one who has come to the "land of opportunity and promise."
Then there is Wai Mai’s new friend, Charles, with whom she is developing a great friendship. Wai Mai hopes it will turn into more than just friendship, but she is also cautious because Charles is talking about moving to a warmer climate.
You are Wai Mai. What should you do?

Workshop Description
Lewis Carroll is rumored to have said, "If you don’t know where you
are going, any road will get you there," and this applies to career
development, too. Some career coaches say that many people will have six
different jobs in multiple careers over their work lives. Even if you don’t
have six different jobs, you are more likely than not, to change jobs a
few times at least. Whether you job hop and move from one job to another
similar job or whether you change careers altogether, it pays to have a
plan. The more information you have about your skills, abilities and interests
as well as what specific industries and jobs are all about, the better choices
you are likely to make.
WHAT YOU WILL LEARN
This 2-hour Lunch ‘n Learn Workshop will teach you:
- how to identify your interests, skills and abilities
- where to go to learn what jobs/careers are available
- how to draft a personal career plan
