Motivating and Managing the Team: What Works? What Doesnt?
Scenario – Jennifer Cutler: What Would You Do?

Jennifer Cutler joined the Rome Manufacturing Company as Administrative Supervisor, reporting directly to the Vice-President of Engineering. Jennifer supervises a support staff of two: Sarah, an assistant to the Manager of the Product Design Group, and Jill, a data processor who also performs general office duties. Jennifer came to the company through a recruiting firm because the Vice-President of Engineering didnt believe that anyone currently in the company could do the job he wanted done.

Sarah is very upset that the position of Supervisor was not offered to her. After all, she has been with Rome for four years, and she has over 20 years of office experience. For the past two weeks, since Jennifer came to Rome, Sarah has called in sick three times. Furthermore, her work has been slipping, and the Manager of the Product Design Group has asked Jennifer to get Sarah motivated or get her out.

Jill doesnt appear to have a motivation problem. At least thats what it appears on the surface. Everyone loves Jill. She offers to help anyone who asks for help. Since she has excellent data processing skills, she can accomplish a lot in a little time. As a result, she has time to make photocopies, assist the mailroom with special deliveries, serve on the companys diversity task force and the social committee. Jill is also taking night school classes to earn a certificate in Information Technology. Jill is beginning to drop little hints to Jennifer that Sarah should be disciplined for not taking her job seriously.
