Stress Management For Busy People

Scenario – Mike Holmes: What Would You Do?

Mike Holmes is a superb graphic designer who has worked for this well-known, international advertising agency for seven years. Mike’s work has been featured in magazines, and he has won both agency and national awards for creativity and innovative use of visual images to portray everything from clothing to automobiles to charity campaigns.

Mike has always been "high strung" but he felt it came with the territory of being an artist. Lately, though, life has been getting to Mike. More often than not, he has to drag himself out of bed in the morning to make the 7 a.m. train into the city. Even at 6:50 a.m., he frequently has to park in the remote parking lot and sprint to make the train. Each time he does this, he vows to lose 20 pounds and to give up smoking, but, of course, he hasn’t done either yet.

Mike is perceived by others in the agency as a bit aloof. Most people know not to interrupt him when he is designing, and the radio station he listens to isn’t something that makes people feel like intruding, casually, into his cube space.

Mike is hard on himself and his roommates. In his work, he is rejecting more and more of his initial design work and just decides to start again from scratch. His roommates have told him he’s too moody and to lighten up. If only he could get just one more outstanding idea for his current project, he thinks out loud, then he could relax.

You are Mike. What’s going on and what will you do about it?
